Mental-health professionals have a greater understanding of the disorder from studying them. Two women hold each other as they watch the World Trade Center burn on Sept…. (Ernesto Mora / Associated Press) September 05, 2011|By Melissa Healy, Los Angeles Times For New York City resident Esperanza Muñoz, the attack on the World Trade Centers is not over 10 years later — not by a long shot. At odd moments, the stench of death still rises to her nose, and the 55-year-old woman slides into a haze of nausea and tears. She suffers headaches and is awakened several times a week by nightmares of headless bodies and shoes with bits of feet left inside. She dreads the sound of sirens or a passing plane.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental and emotional condition that has its origins in a physical and/or mentally traumatic event that occurred anywhere from a few days to several years in the past. PTSD can develop by one overwhelming trauma as in 9/11 or by a series of smaller traumas or abuses occurring over several years such as living in an alcoholic home. It can be recognized from symptoms such as recurrent and persistent recollections of the traumatic event and recurring dreams of the event. The history of PTSD date back to the early 1800′s where military doctors began diagnosing soldiers with “exhaustion” following the stress of battle. This “exhaustion” was characterized by mental shutdown due to individual or group trauma.
Telling my story I dont expect you to pity me or to feel sorry for me. Just understand & listen. I’m still learning. I went through a dysfunctional family & a diffulcult childhood. My dad was a residential school survivor and my mom went through the same symptoms and patterns i went through. So i had to fight the demons with them growing up…at the age of six. I went through alot at a young age, and so did my sister. and sorry if i didn’t share more, but I’d blacked out some memories back then…i cant seem to remember some memories, only a few memories. During the story. I said we left my dad one night, after the traumatic event. A year later he came back to us, and i was relieved for some time, and he’s been sober for 15 years..and went through a healing journey, and so did my mother. & of course me as well. & just last year. I completely forgived my father and mother, and that wall between us broke down after letting forgiving them. it was the greatest feeling i ever had in forever. The weight was off my shoulders. I took me awhile to see myself, and release all that anger & heavy emotional baggage i was carrying around all these years. It wasn’t easy. After being quiet in over a decade. But i eventually get it all out. Almost all of it. I’m still recovering everyday. PS for those of you still holding all your emotions on what you went through. Don’t hold them in. Supressing it only makes it worse…Let it all out. I guarantee it’ll make you feel better afterwards. it …
